Language Feature Identification

When we speak we use a variety of language features to make our speech more understandable. For example, in our conversation transcript we came across the dialog “yeah, I feel like it’s kinda … ya know?” The sentence starts of with a verbal filler (“yeah”) to allow the speaker time to think about what they are going to say say, as well as alerting the other person that they are are about to speak and should listen. An abbreviation is then used (“kinda”) for time efficiency so that the speaker can get their point across more quickly. This is followed by an ellipse, however the ellipse is not necessarily intended in the speech but can be heard when listened too. This is used because the speaker could not think of anything to say, so instead of using a verbal filler they just paused. The last language feature used in this sentence is “Ya know?” this is used to ask for confirmation from the listener that they understand what was said. However, the reader would have had to infer or read between the lines to understand what was meant.
